Objectives:

Upon completion of this module:

1. The learner will have a general understanding of the regulations governing excavation safety.
2. The learner will understand many of the specific terms and their definitions relating to excavations.
3. The learner will understand the conditions and forces that can act upon soil to create the potential for dangerous cave-ins.
4. The learner will become familiar with the four basics soil types, including visual and manual tests to determine them, and how they relate to excavation safety.
5. The learner will become familiar with methods used to protect an excavation, including shoring, shielding, and sloping.
